Declaration on Feminist Foreign Policy for Latin America and the Caribbean

In March 2024, Mexico led Latin America on the adoption of the Declaration on Feminist Foreign Policy for Latin America and the Caribbean. The adoption of the declaration was announced on the sidelines of the VIII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States or CELAC.

The declaration was co-sponsored by Chile and Colombia, and received support from Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. It prioritizes the promotion of gender equality in the region, calling on these adhering countries (representing 70% of the region’s total population) to guide their foreign policy based on the values of gender equality, the inclusion of women and centring of their leadership in the international arena, and the elimination of gender gaps and violence.

The declaration commits to promote the participation and leadership of women in the region, to help reduce the gender gaps and to promote the empowerment and economic autonomy of women in all their diversity, and address the root causes of inequality manifesting as discrimination, violence and poverty at the regional level.

It prioritizes an intersectoral approach, by taking into account the interconnection among different kinds of discrimination, such as gender, race, social class, and sexual orientation. It calls for active collaboration among international organizations and civil society to design specific measures to advance towards substantive equality in our countries.
